Seasonal changes in abundances of major soil micro-arthropods were assessed at aPinus pumila scrub in an alpine range of central Japan during a period with no snow coverage. The total abundance showed a peak in late August, reaching no less than 140 000 m−2, which was comparable to that in an evergreen coniferous plantation in the cool-temperate zone. Collembola was the most dominant group of soil micro-arthropods, comprising about 50% of the total, followed by oribatid mites (Acari [O]) occupying 20%. Annual mean air temperature was no more than 2.1 °C and the daily fluctuation in temperature was less in soil layers. The thickness of the A0 layer reached 9–10 cm and soil organic matter accumulation was estimated to be 45–58 ton dry weight ha−1. The large amount of litterfall and organic matter accumulation in the soil, comparable to those of sub-alpine evergreen coniferous forests, and a lower decomposition rate due to severe environmental conditions, suggest the relative importance of litter processing by soil micro-arthropods such as Collembola and Acari, especially in alpine regions.  相似文献

Th effect of fenvalerate 20% EC (a synthetic pyrethroid) on the growth of two ectomycorrhizal fungi, Thelephora terrestris and Laccaria laccata, was studied in vitro. In the case of T. terrestris, mycelial growth was promoted at lower concentrations of the insecticide but inhibited at higher concentrations; mycelial growth of L. laccata decreased with increase in concentration. The effect of the insecticide at three concentrations (0.25, 0.5, 1.5 ppm) was also studied on ectomycorrhizal formation in 4-month-old seedlings of Pinus patula in nursery trials. At lower concentrations the insecticide had no significant effect on mycorrhizal formation.  相似文献

The mycofloral succession on the needles ofPinus sylvestris was investigated in Tübingen, southwest Germany. Dead needles attached to the branches (D-type), those caught on branches (C-type) and three types of fallen needles, i.e., freshly fallen (L-type), slightly discolored (OL-type) and almost black needles (F-type) were examined for their fungal flora. Common primary saprophytes were rich on the dead needles on the tree, and on the L-type needles. They were replaced by successive species that contained the well-known species preferring pine needles as their substratum, such asVerticicladium trifidum orSympodiella acicola. Their ecological niches in pine leaf litter and their distribution patterns from a biogeographical viewpoint were discussed.  相似文献

Fire-maintained, species-rich pine-wiregrass savannas in the Green Swamp, North Carolina were sampled over their natural range of environmental conditions and fire frequencies. Species composition, species richness, diversity (Exp H′, 1/C), and aboveground production were documented and fertilization experiments conducted to assess possible mechanisms for the maintenance of high species diversity in these communities. Although savanna composition varies continuously, DECORANA ordination and TWINSPAN classification of 21 sites facilitated recognition of 3 community types: dry, mesic, and wet savannas. These savannas are remarkably species-rich with up to 42 species/0.25 m2 and 84 species/625 m2. Maximum richness occurred on mesic, annually burned sites. Aboveground production, reported as peak standing crop, was only 293 g · m?2 on a frequently burned mesic savanna but was significantly higher (375 g · m?2) on an infrequently burned mesic site. Production values from fertilized high and low fire frequency sites were equivalent. Monthly harvest samples showed that savanna biomass composition by species groups did not vary seasonally, but within groups the relative importance of species showed clear phenological progressions. The variation in species richness with fire frequency is consistent with non-equilibrium theories of species diversity, while phenological variation in production among similar species and the changing species composition across the moisture gradient suggest the importance of equilibrium processes for maintenance of savanna diversity.  相似文献

Summary Chemical analysis of samples of needles of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis), humus and mineral soil collected in the vicinity of the Pb-smelter in Lavrion, Attica, showed that an area of about 2 km around the smelter is heavily polluted primarily with Pb and also with Zn, S and F. Most of the Pb was found accumulated in the humus and the top layer of the mineral soil.About 50% of the Pb found in the samples of Aleppo pine needles could be removed by washing them in a dilute detergent solution. One and 15% of the total Pb from Pb-polluted soil and humus samples, respectively, was extracted with normal ammonium acetate solution. No Pb or a very small amount was extracted with distilled H2O from humus and soil samples treated with concentrations of Pb as high as 3000 ppm and incubated in the laboratory for 30 days.Humus samples treated with up to 1500 ppm Pb or Pb-polluted humus samples collected from points leeward of the smelter had no adverse effects on the germination of Aleppo pine seeds. When the germination experiment was conducted on Pb-polluted humus samples from points windward of the smelter, where a temporary pine needle death had been observed, the percentage seed germination, for two years, was found reduced and negatively correlated to the distance of the humus sampling point from the Pb-smelter.In nursery experiments Pb concentrations of up to 2000 ppm, added to a calcareous soil, had no adverse effect on height increase of Aleppo pine seedlings. Very little Pb was transported from the roots to the needles after seven months growth of the seedlings on either Pb-amended soil or on Pb-polluted soil from Lavrion. Concentrations of Pb in the roots of the seedlings, however, were found high in both cases and almost proportional to concentrations of Pb in the soil.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between disease incidence and the density of host plant populations were investigated in the Pinus sylvestris-Phacidium infestans host-fungal pathogen association, in which the season of death of plants killed up to 3 years previously could be accurately determined. Significant (P<0.05), positive density-dependent relationships between the proportion of plants dying in the winters of 1987–1988, 1988–1989 or 1989–1990 and the original stand density were detected in 12 of 26 comparisons. Of the remaining comparisons, all but three had positive regression coefficients for the same association. Plants killed up to 2 years previously contributed to inoculum production. The use of standing dead as a predictor in the analyses showed that the proportion of plants dying in the winters of 1988–1989 or 1989–1990 was generally better correlated with standing dead in the previous summer than with the density of the original population. Significant (P<0.05), positive density-dependent associations were also found between the proportion of living plants in 1990 infected with P. infestans and the number of standing dead plants in all nine comparisons. In contrast, only four of the nine associations between these proportions of infected plants and population density were significant. The strength of the density-dependent relationships varied substantially within and between sites. Much of this variation appears to be due to differences in the stage of development of the epidemics occurring at different sites.  相似文献

Summary The Thriasian Plain near Athens in Greece is a site of concentrated industrial development. Total concentrations of Pb, Cd and extractable SO4 2– in surface soil samples collected from this area, were found to be, respectively, 2–7, 6–34 and 2–20 times higher than those in similar soil samples from parts of the country remote from industrial activity.Total concentrations of Pb, Cd, Zn, Cr and S in samples of olive leaves from the same area were found to be, respectively, 4–40, 3–10, 3–9, 2–6 and 17–21 times higher than those found in samples of olive leaves from rural sites. Leaves of cabbages growing in the area contained between 0.82 and 40 g/g (wet weight) of Pb.Addition of Cd, Ni and Cu to a calcareous potted soil at concentrations of 100, 200 and 200 ppm increased the concentrations of the metals in the needles of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis) seedlings to 4.5, 3.5 and 10 ppm, respectively, after 7 months growth in the nursey.  相似文献

Stomatal density, anatomy and nutrient concentrations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles were studied during 3 years of growth at elevated CO2 (693 ± 30 µmol mol−1), at elevated temperature (ambient +2·8–6·2 °C depending on the time of the year) and in a combination of elevated CO2 and temperature in closed-top chambers. The treatments were started in August 1996. At elevated temperature, the needles that were grown in the first year (i.e. the 1997 cohort) were thinner, had thinner mesophyll in the abaxial side, thinner vascular cylinder and lower stomatal density than those grown at ambient temperature. The proportion of mesophyll area occupied by vascular cylinder or intercellular spaces were not changed. Lower stomatal density apparently did not lead to decreased use of water, as these needles had higher concentrations of less mobile nutrients (Ca, Mg, B, Zn and Mn), which could indicate increased total transpiration. In the 1997 and 1998 cohorts, elevation of temperature decreased concentrations of N, P, K, S and Cu. In the 1999 cohort, contradictory, higher concentrations of N and S at elevated temperature may be related to increased nutrient mineralization in the soil. Elevation of CO2 did not affect stomatal density, needle thickness, thickness of epidermis or hypodermis, vascular cylinder or intercellular spaces. Concentrations of N, P, S and Cu decreased at elevated CO2. Reductions were transient and most distinct in the 1997 cohort. The effects of CO2 and temperature were in some cases interactive, which meant that in the combined treatment stomatal density decreased less than at elevated temperature, and concentrations of nutrients decreased less than expected on the basis of separate treatments, whereas the thickness of the epidermis and hypodermis decreased more than in the separate treatments. In conclusion, alterations in the anatomy and stomatal density of Scots pine needles were more distinct at elevated temperature than at elevated CO2. Both elevated CO2 and temperature-induced changes in nutrient concentrations that partly corresponded to the biochemical and photosynthetic alterations in the same cohorts ( Luomala et al. Plant, Cell and Environment 26, 645–660, 2003 ) Reductions in nutrient concentrations and alterations in the anatomy were transient and more evident in the needle cohort that was grown in the first treatment year.  相似文献

Abstract Aim We addressed four objectives: (1) Determine the regional responses of species, size classes and a vegetation type to climate and parent material predictors, including their distributions in environmental space and the relative contributions of the predictors to explained variation. (2) Determine whether size classes of a species respond similarly to climate and parent material. (3) Assess the extent to which the predicted regional distribution of a vegetation type can be approximated by the distribution of its diagnostic species and vice versa. The establishment of a consistent relationship between the distribution of a vegetation type and its diagnostic species would facilitate change detection, management and conservation planning by allowing the use of one distribution to generate the other when data availability is limited. (4) Examine landscape‐scale environmental variability in predicted species and vegetation type distributions. Location South‐western USA (Arizona, New Mexico and southern Colorado). Methods Ecological response surface models were developed using a data base of 1409 vegetation plots to analyse biotic–environmental relationships of (1) Pinus ponderosa P. & C. Lawson and Abies concolor (Gord. & Glend.) Lindl. Ex Hildebr. size classes, (2) P. ponderosa, A. concolor and Quercus gambelii Nutt. combined size classes, and (3) a P. ponderosa forest type widely distributed in the south‐western USA. Results and main conclusions Pinus ponderosa and A. concolor models generally were judged to be successful. Quercus gambelii models were judged unsuccessful, which may result from the influence of variables not modelled, such as soil moisture, disturbance, biotic factors and other site limiting factors. Size classes differed in the range of environmental conditions associated with high occurrence probabilities within and between species, reflecting differences in the effects of climate variability and anthropogenic changes, such as fire suppression, on the distribution of each size class. Pinus ponderosa alliance was predicted to be distributed over a narrower range of environmental conditions than P. ponderosa species models, therefore limiting the use of this vegetation type as a surrogate for the distribution of the dominant species, and vice versa. Maps of combinations of environmental variables that produced a high probability of P. ponderosa occurrence showed that some landscapes predicted to contain the species exhibited diverse environmental conditions over short distances. The use of regional environmental relationships to characterize areas with high local environmental variability may facilitate identification of areas of potential rapid biotic change.  相似文献
